Play-based preschool in a unique learning environment

Registration for the 2019-2020 school year opens on Thursday, Feb. 21. Request a tour today.

Our son loves preschool at Discovery Playtown. His favorite thing to tell us is, 'We don’t learn at preschool.' But then he tells us everything he learned that day and says, 'Well I guess it's so fun it doesn’t feel like learning'. He’s made great friends and definitely expanded his social skills. He’s now excited to start kindergarten. - PARENT

At Discovery Playtown, we believe that play is important work for children, and that it allows them to learn about their world and practice new and developing skills. At Little Explorers Preschool, we utilize a play-based approach to learning. Through stories, songs, games, art projects, circle time, dramatic play, hands-on exploration, and science experiments, children will develop intellectually, socially, emotionally, and physically. Our unique facility combines traditional classrooms with a large, imaginative playspace, making it unlike any other preschool environment. We have the ability to teach counting and sorting in our grocery store, food preparation and customer service in our diner, or housekeeping in our two-story playhouse. Through their observations and interactions with other children, kids pick up on valuable social cues and behaviors, enhanced by our dramatic-play environment.

Tell us about your background working with children

I became a certified teacher after college teaching third grade for six years and working as a reading specialist for three years. Since then I have been a nanny and volunteer in a Montessori-based program at our church. Now I enjoy working with children and teachers as the director of Discovery Playtown. My greatest passion is observing the development and growth of children and sharing in their joy as they learn about themselves and the world around them.

What are some of the things you enjoy about Little Explorers Preschool at Discovery Playtown?

One of the greatest joys of working with the Little Explorers Preschool is watching the children form friendships with each other. The second greatest joy is seeing them develop new skills and insights about the world around them. Seeing a child suddenly begin counting and recognizing numbers, or learning how to wait for a turn reminds me that it is the little things in life that truly matter.

What does the importance of play in early childhood development mean to you?

Young children are naturally curious about their world and desire independence. They are most attracted to things that bring joy and real life. It is up to us to structure the environment in such a way that the children can gradually build their skills and increase their knowledge through the playful activities that engage their hearts and minds. They will absorb math concepts through playing games and singing songs about numbers, or measuring pumpkins more than through an adult explaining these concepts with words.

My husband and I opened Discovery Playtown in 2016 with a passion for bringing families together through play and learning with their children. We also desired to have a family business so that our three children could be a part of our work. We live in Renton with our 2 cats, Leo and Lucy.

Favorite vacation destination?

Anywhere with water to play in: Lake Couer D’Alene, the Oregon Coast, and Hawaii are all favorites for me.

Tell us about your background working with children

I worked as a nanny while I was going to college to get my teaching degree. After college I worked as a substitute teacher, and then spent 5 years working in childcare.

What are some of the things you enjoy about Little Explorers Preschool at Discovery Playtown?

I enjoy working here because it gives me a chance to help the children explore, learn, and play. Everyone can learn and grow at their own pace. I also enjoy doing projects with them - it is not uncommon to see me sitting at the art table coloring with all of the kids.

What does the importance of play in early childhood development mean to you?

I believe that play is the most important part of early childhood development. Young children learn so much just by exploring their environment, and play is the best way for them to do that. When learning is fun children retain more - what’s more fun than play?

Tell us about your family

I am the youngest child of five in my family, and I have 2-year-old twin boys with my fiancé.

Favorite vacation destination?

I love to spend time in the mountains camping. It’s a fun getaway that I can do at a moment’s notice. When it comes to taking a "real" vacation I love going to Disney World in Florida. I’m counting down the days until my boys are old enough to go!
