Discovery Playtown

Play-based preschool in a unique learning environment

Our son loves preschool at Discovery Playtown. His favorite thing to tell us is, 'We don’t learn at preschool.' But then he tells us everything he learned that day and says, 'Well I guess it's so fun it doesn’t feel like learning'. He’s made great friends and definitely expanded his social skills. He’s now excited to start kindergarten. - PARENT

At Discovery Playtown, we believe that play is important work for children, and that it allows them to learn about their world and practice new and developing skills. At Little Explorers Preschool, we utilize a play-based approach to learning. Through stories, songs, games, art projects, circle time, dramatic play, hands-on exploration, and science experiments, children will develop intellectually, socially, emotionally, and physically. Our unique facility combines traditional classrooms with a large, imaginative playspace, making it unlike any other preschool environment. We have the ability to teach counting and sorting in our grocery store, food preparation and customer service in our diner, or housekeeping in our two-story playhouse. Through their observations and interactions with other children, kids pick up on valuable social cues and behaviors, enhanced by our dramatic-play environment.

Director

Emily Lafferty

Ms. Emily has spent ten years working in education. She holds her bachelors degree in theatre from Miami University and her Masters in Education from The Ohio State University. After spending her graduate years studying under experts in the field of dramatic play in education, Emily made a career of teaching using play and pretend as tools for learning. Her background has always balanced her two passions: early childhood education and theatre. She toured Europe with a West End theatre company as their child-actor manager and has worked in a wide array of childcare centers across the country. Emily and her family live in Maple Valley.

Lead Teacher

Shannon Houston

Ms. Shannon brings over 20 years of experience in early childhood education to Discovery Playtown. She graduated from Washington State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology. Coming from a family of teachers, she tried to break the mold by studying to become a doctor. However in college she worked at a daycare center, and caught the bug. She has worked with children from infant to school age, but her passion is for preschool. She loves it when a child comes in the door and asks, "What are we learning about today?" Shannon lives in Maple Valley with her family.
